Spanish Freestyle Champs 08

Last weekend we had the Spanish Freestyle Championship in Ourense, at the same spot the Freestyle European Championship will be celebrated in two weeks.� The Spanish Championship was a test for the organizers to see how things are and how they should be.

We went there on Friday, however we coludn’t paddle there because tehre wasn’t enough water, so we drove to Frieira, a great spot where we had a Eurocup last year. The competition started and finished on saturday, in the city of Ourense in Galicia.

The wave was really small, so it was really hard to get good moves, and even harder to stick it.

The competition was good, and after having good rides on prelims and semis I won the finals and became the Spanish Champion 2008. It was good.

On Sunday we drove to San Sebastian where we surfed some great waves. It was really cool however there where lots of angry surfers!!

The week. part 2.

So after paddling the cauterets waterfall (bousses), we droveover the border and crossed to Spain. We spent the night in Valle del Cinqueta, an amazing deep valley with a great river

We woke up the next day, met some friends and drove straight to the put-in of the upper section. The next day we ran a section little upstream of the upper. That saction was really good, with cool rapids, slides, waterfalls, etc.

The next day, we drove to another river that was great, one of the best I’ve ever paddled.

This week has been amazing, paddlind a lot, having fun and enjoying life!!

The awesome week! (Part 1)

Last week I went paddling with some friends. On monday we drove to Saut deth Pish, a nice park and huck in la vall d’aran (spain). We ran the drop lots of times and took some good pictures however we had a grey day.

After that we drove to Cauterets, France, where we met some friends. We spent the night there and had a great day on the river, running great rapids and taking lots of photos. In the afternoon we went to see a nice waterfall, and after some scounting I decided to run it. The hardest things about this waterfall were the put in, cause there was an unrunable rapid just above, so I had to put in vertically with a rope and some help from a friend. Then the lip of the waterfall was just a few metres downstream (something like 5 m), where there were two big curlers and some rocks… it was hard. After that, the pool was with strong current to the next rapid…

Palomeres

Some days ago I went to paddle the Palomeres with some friends. The Palomeres is a little creek that flows from Tavascan, one of the best valleys in the Pyrennes.

Palomeres is one of my favourite runs here in the Pyrennes, and it’s just 40 minutes from home. This was my first run of this season on the Palomeres, and I was really happy about paddling this little creek. However it’s just 600 metres long, it has some really good rapids and when the river is plenty of water it’s awesome.

However the river wasn’t high, we had a great level and a perfect day with clear sky sunshine, so we ran it couple times and then headed to the Upper Noguera on the next valley. The upper noguera is wider and has more water than the Palomeres however it’s way less steep.

So after running these greats rivers we drove back home, and got back to real life.

1st Extreme Kayak

Last weekend I went to the 1st Extreme Kayak in Catalonia, concretely in the Upper Noguera, near Sort (Pyrennes). The event was really cool, with prelims in saturday and finals in sunday. On sunday we raced by couples and had to do an eddy and touch something like a bell for the cows.

The event was great and BURNS did a great job taking 2 places on the top 4. The river isn’t hard, but it’s a good place for an extreme race, lots of carnage seen!!

I hope we’ll repeat this great event next year!! so thanks to all organizers and sponsors!!

Freestyle france…

Last weekend we went to paddle to Millau, France; however the river Tarn was little higher than normally due of some rains, so the slalom course was closed and it was forbbiden to paddle there. We looked for another spot around, but we didn’t found anything good enough. Next day we drove south and found a natural slalom course with a good hole, so we spent the whole day althought it was cold, windy and it rained. I don’t ahve any photo and not so much footage cause of the weather… will be better soon.

Catalan Cup in Millau

This weekend we went to the catalan freestyle cup in Millau (France). We paddled and trained on saturday with an incredible clear and blue sky, and we did the competition on sunday.

The competition day was really cold� however it was well organized and fun. After having some good rides I got first in prelims and ended first in the finals.

The small REV worked amazingly well, getting some good air and nice rides with ends and other moves.

Another REV weekend

This weeken I went to paddle in la seu (Catalonia), where there’s an artificial slalom course. Some slalom world cups were celebrated there, and the olympics too in Barcelona 1992.

So after having my first session with the small REV last weekend, I felt really used to boat this time, and I enjoyed it a lot!!

The only problem about this slalom course is that there’s just one spot for freestyle, and� it’s� really shallow!! so if you aren’t careful you hit the bottom all the time!! and it also limit the moves you can do. However all this stuff mentioned, it was cool and had some fun sessions in the water, however it was cold!!

REV S weekend

I’ve paddling with the small REV this weekend and I would descrive it as an amazing weekend. We went to Millau (France), where there’s an artificial slalom course, and of course, a small but cool hole.

Here you have some photos of the weekend.

This was my first time paddling a REV, and it was great. The boat performed really well, fulfilling all the expectations. The REV is fast, maneuverable and really easy to paddle.

We got some footage, so I’ll post a little video as soon as I can.

We are having our first regional freestyle competition next weekend!!

Ulla 2008

After a long studying season I went to paddle a little in Galicia, Spain.

Galicia and Portugal are well known for its famous granite slides and drops, however we didn’t went there cause everything was dry, so we went to paddle the Ulla, a little river on the east. The river was really low however ther wasn’t anything else to do so… let’s get wet!

The Ulla has a 6 km section with some cool rapids and really nice landscape throught the forest. With big water this cool rapids will become really cool rapids, and the river will be really fun. We’ll see next time!

As you can see in the photos, the fantastic BURN flew over every drop, and this time I had the chance to try out the new Predator SIX helmet. The helmet is amazing, really light and comfortable, and makes you feel really safe and brave!

Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championship 2007, Austria

Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championship 2007, �etz, Tirol, Austria

As you all know the Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championshipwas celebrated from the 3rd to the 6th of october in �etz, Tirol, Austria.

The �etz is such a cool river, with lots of sections to run… The prelims should be done on a 300m run on the middle oetz, and the finals on the Wellerbrucke section, a really cool 200m run, steep and with lots of fun. There’s a trail to walk back up to the put-in next to the river…

The event was really well organized, however they weren’t lucky with the waterlevels, so the competition was definitively cancelled on sunday after postponed it on friday and saturday.

Lots of paddlers (171) came to the event, representing 25 countries. Guys from Pyranha came from the US (Jared, Dave and Graham), UK (Rich, James, Tom…), Switzerland (Toro)… it was really good to see everybody there!!

Kanumesse 2007

From the 13th to the 15th of september, the Kanumesse 2007 took palce at the International Exhibition Centre in Nuremberg, Germany. The Kanumesse is an international trade fair for the paddlesports business.

Manufacturers, from Germany and Europe as well as from overseas, were there to show their latest equipment to retailers, distributors and professional buyers.

So of course, Pyranha and all his associated companies were there to show all their new toys and ideas!

The Pyranha stand, with one of the old Everest that did the 1st descent of the river of the Everst (Dudh Kosi) in 1976.

Burns with some new sweet colours!

So, here it’s the EVEREST, the new WW expedition kayak: The new Everest takes the benchmark Burn design and gives some extra length and volume for those longer trips, heavier paddlers and bigger water conditions. The rails have been softened slightly while up top on the deck the water shedding �V� has been increased as has the bow rocker to provide a great handling boat when fully loaded for longer trips or with just your day gear in it.

The Everest looks quite good, I’m looking forward to paddle it!! You can also check a clip of the Everest.

On the other hand we have the REV, the new revolutinoary playboat from Pyranha. The Rev will be avaiable in three sizes: S, M, L, and will be in shops really soon. Centred volume, sharp edges…

Thun River Jam 07, CH

The second edition of the Thun River Jam was celebrated from the 31st of august to the 2nd of september in Thun, Switzerland. The event combined Freestyle Kayak and River Surfing in the centre of Thun. There was also a Big Air and a King of the Wave competition.

Euro Cup Final

Freestyle Euro Cup Final in Galicia, Spain. The last of three events, one in Austria and the other one in Sweden.

Spanish Freestyle Champs

The Spanish Freestyle Championship was celebrated in Sort last weekend (14/15 of july).

The Worlds in 2001 and the European Champs in 2004 were celebrated there as well, however the spot is different every year because it is destroyed every spring with high river levels.

The competition was really well organized, and there was a Rapid Racing competition where you could win a spanish ham, cheese, bottles of wine…. and typical products.

The Esera

Today I went to paddle a really nice river in the Pyrenes, the upper Esera, that flows from the highest mountain in the Pyrenes, the Aneto. It was cloudy but there was a pretty good waterlevel.

There’s a 5 km section with two cool canyons with a couple of reakky nice rapids. There’s a big slide also that ends on some rocks, so if you run it I think you gonna crash you back…

The river is really nice, the landscape is awesome and the rapids are really fun.

Cauterets, the french paradise!

Couple of days ago I went to Cauterets, a great valley in the French Pyrenes.The waterlevel wasn’t so high, but enough to run everything and a couple of portages. The Cauterets river is one of the classics in the Pyrenes, with a really cool slide, lots of sections with nice rapids, a good drop… There’s a little of everything, and the landscape is amazing.

Le Carol, frenchy style!

Today we went to paddle the Carol, a little river in the French border with Spain. The waterlevel wasn’t so high, because it was snowing a couple of days ago,. but enough to run the drops and have some fun.

The day started pretty good, sunshine and no clouds, but while we were driving through there the weather got worse, so it was nearly snowing in the river. However we had a relly cool day, running some drops and paddling again after some days and weeks of working.

�After a hard day of working rafting in the Noguera Pallaresa, we went to burn the local creek again. It was late in the afternoon and there wasn’t so much light, but we took some shots.

After parking at the take-out and walk upstream for 15 minuteswe started paddling downstream.

Palomeres creek!

The Palomeers creek is one of my favourites runs. In high flows you can’t stop, so you run 500 metres of continuous drops and slides. It’s so cool!!

The Palomeres creek is a really short run, just 500 metres, so you walk upstream for 10 minutes, run it in two and go for it again and again!!

Upper Noguera.

After an unusual spring with some snow, the sun is shining again, the snow is melting and the rivers are getting cool!!

Yeahh there is still some snow!

Today I went to paddle the upper Noguera, a nice run in the Catalan Pyrenes, Spain. This river is really nice, continuous and with a good flow. There are some good holes too!!

Romadriu Park & Huck

Yeah, today I went to run a nice park & huck really near to home. This river is usaully dry, but after some good rain in the Pyrenes we could run this short creek. A couple of rapids and a cool tiny drop.

Right now I’m paddling the AMMO, the perfect boat for this little creeks we have here in the Pyrenes.

Cantabria Style!!

It’s raining and snowing so hard here in Spain during all this week, so I went paddling to Cantabria, in the north of Spain. I paddled two rivers, the Calera and the Gandara, which has really cool slides.

The waterlevel wasn’t so high like some days ago, but still good to paddle some stuff.

The last day in Chile, Nilahue.

This is a post from my last day in Chile. Just before taking my plane in the night I went to the Nilahue river with some friends, a good river near Pucon. The Nilahue river is a little flat, but there’s a really nice drop. Last year the drop changed a lot, from a double drop to a nice slide.

Last days…

We went to scout a big waterfall, big there wasn’t enough water, so the entry was so hard with two hard possible lines. After a long scouting of the waterfall from all places we decided to don’t run it, so we left and drove to a next river with a really nice little drop.

Middle Palguin

This morning we have gone to have some fun running this watefall in the Palguin river. The palguin river is a really nice run near to Pucon, Chile, where I’ve been paddling all this winter with my BURN.

Now it’s time to get ready to come back to the north hemisphere for another good season of paddling.

Upper Palguin!!

The Palguin river is a classic here in Puc�n, it has a good waterlevel all the summer, so it’s a good option to paddle some nice drops on the afternoon. There’s a big portage too, that can be ran. The line of the portage is really hard, so you run it fliped allways…

The river is really nice with beautiful landscape and really near to home.

I’m in Futaleuf�, one of the best rivers in Chile and in the world. Right now the waterlevel is low, but it’s better for freestyle. The Futa is in the south of Chile, in a really wild region, but amazing.

The Plata is a really nice river that comes from a really step valley near Puc�n that ends on the Villarrica lake. The Plata has a really deep canyon with plenty of vegetation and some granite drops. The Plata has only been paddled by two other groups before us. The hiking to the put-in is long, but the worst is to get down to the river again in the middle of the jungle with no trail… The river hasn’t got too much water, but enough to be ran.

Llancahue

The Llancahue borns on the south face of the Villarrica volcano.�We went to have a look to a new section of the Llancahue, but right now there’s too much water. The Llancahue is a really wet river, with deep canyons with plenty of vegetation and volcanic rock from the eruptions of the Villarrica volcano. It’s really hard to scout, so it’s hard to put-in and take-out of the river. We spent a day scouting a small part of the river and looking for a take-out, but the canyon is too deep, so you have to run the whole section.

When we woke up the next day the waterlevel was higher, abd the rapids look pretty hard. I finally ran the two first rapids and the first drop.�This section of the river has never been paddled before so I ran the first descent of this nice waterfall.�The river is really step with no eddys, and the end of the second rapid was waterfall. There was just a little eddy to stop before the fall. The fall was high, and the pool was really violent with no eddy and a lot of water going downstream to the next clean and really nice drop with no exit. The only problem of this second one was that if you ran it, there was no way to take-out, so we decided to wait a few weeks for low water and run all the section.

Mariman 2!!

The Saltos del Mariman is a really big rapid on the Upper Trancura. It’s aportage also.�It has two lines the main channel on the right and a waterfall on the left. I’ve already run the left line in high water, but I was waiting for lower water to run the big line.

The entry is like 2 metres drop, then a huge hole from wall to wall, and then a nice drop with some hard retention on the landing.

� I ran the rapid pretty good, but on the last drop my boof wasn’t enough and I got into the hole. I just cartwheel a little with my BURN and then go out. It was a really nice day in the river paddling a really class V rapid.

The Fuy is a really nice river close to Pucon. We paddled the upper section, a class III-IV river with some nice rapids and really beautyful landscape. I paddled it in the 4TWENTY because it’s an easy river with lots of good waves to play.

After paddling the Gol Gol we crossed the border to Argentina. We drove to Bariloche, a big touristic city in the south of Argentina near Patagonia. Once there we went to the Nahuel Huapi National Park to paddel the r�o Manso.

We slept there and we ran a really nice slide and a waterfall, the well known Alerces Waterfall. After a week of hard rain, the waterlevel was high, and the slide and the waterfall looked huge. There was the same waterlevel as in the Twitch V, when Tao bermand the other guys ran the drops. We ran the slide first and then the waterfall, my partener broke his paddel on the slide. I ran the slide and the waterfall pretty good, the only problem was that I ended on the right eddy of the waterfall, so I couldn’t cross and I had to climb.

Paddling south!!

I’ve been paddling in the south of Chile and Argentina. I’ve paddled the Gol Gol, a really nice river with lots of waterfalls. The Gol gol borns in the Chilean border with Argentina. The section is just 6 km, but with lots of nice rapids, most of them drops, from thtree to 15 metres. We were lucky to paddel the Gol gol with a pretty good waterlevel.

Canyon of the Claro!!

I’ve just came back from a trip to the north, the Rio Claro again. We went there to run the first descent of the canyon of te rio Claro, a really nice section between the 22 and the 7 cups. It’s a 6 km section with a first nice canyon and a second really deep canyon. This is not a really hard canyon but it’s really deep, so you can’t see what’s inside and once you are in there’s no way to get out, so I think it’s why it has never been paddled before. We spent a whole day for the scouting, climbing, walking… It was really hard. On the evening we have scout mostly all the canyon, and we decided to run it the next morning. We woke up early and get to the water. The rapids of the first canyon were really cool, then we arrived to the big canyon. We ran this amazing slide, and then continue with the following rapids, that were nice too. So a really cool first descent of the canyon of the rio Claro, Chile.

Turbio

We paddled the Turbio, one of the best rivers here in Pucon. The Turbio can only be paddled after good rains, and when we came back from our trip on the north the Turbio was on a perfect high waterlevel after a week of hard rains.

We run three drops that haven’t been runned before, here a picture flying in the third one. After the drop there was a really nice rapid with some slides and drops and a really big slide on the end of the rapid. After this rapid there are lots of rapids with nice drops, some other slides and waterfalls.

The Turbio is one of the best rivers I’ve ever padddled!! It’s amazing!!
