This year Teva Mountain Games competition really stepped up with the international field growing substantially. For those of you who don’t know about it, the Mtn Games is one of the best events in the US. The results of this race are held in high regard for most creek boaters out there, being able to challange themselves against the worlds best. During the week you can check out Mountain Bikers, Runners, Climbers, and many other athletes who come from around the world to compete in Vail Colorado.
Pyranha paddlers were out there representing with Josh Bechtel, the Demshitz crew, Jeremy Laucks, and myself to name a few. The water flows were good, it was actually sunny and not snowing like last year. Here are some of the men’s results:

This is the site of the normal Canyon Creek Extreme Race which had to be moved the EF of the Lewis due the this natural disaster.

Details on Todd Wells and other NWCC Hightlights so
Junior Category was super competitive but Regional Team Pyranha paddler Todd Wells ended up in 1st followed by his little bro Brendan in 2nd. Todd Also ended up winning the freestyle huck over the falls with a donkey flip paddle toss stuck clean.

My girlfriend Nicole ended up in 3rd in the fun category which was open to men and women. This was her first extreme race so watch out ladies.

For now its back to the LW and Truss to keep training and getting ready for some more spring competitions….rough life, I know.

Little White Salmon also getting up to super high flows which pushed out most of the wood that was in play. The river seems as clear as I can remember every seeing it. Still a few logs here and there so scout it out if your not sure. Here’s a link to a helmet cam of the whole run shot by Shon Bollock. Good way to scout the river and learn the lines if you haven’t been down before.

I’m crossing my fingers that this year keeps pumping out the precipitation so that we have a sick spring and summer to look forward to.

The first day kicked off with The Homestake Creek Race. I was able to lay down the fastest time on run one and the pressure was on for run number two. I ended up crashing a bit on the last drop which caused me the seconds I needed to end up in first. I am still stoked to have finished in second, the field of competitors out there was stout. Dave Fusilli finished in 9th, and the Seilers rounded out 18 and 22nd. There were around 60 male competitors this year, I can’t wait for next year.

For Freestyle and 8 Ball results

Day two came around and most of the competitors were feeling the results of the night before out on the town. Jared Seiler was able to come out strong for the freestyle prelims but finished only a few points out of the final rounds. One more move on the score card and he would have been in there for sure.

The final day of competition left us with the classic 8 Ball Sprint. There were 40 competitors to start and Team Pyranha was holding strong with all of us moving through the initial round. After 4 more rounds of battling I pushed through the carnage and was able to finish in 1st place.

This past weekend was the 25th Annual Clackamas Whitewater Festival. There was a good time had by all with water levels going through the roof. I ended up taking first place in the Mass Start and the Boater X. The big air ramp was also built with fine craftsmanship, I made it into the finals but was beat out by another Hood River Local Ryan Scott Thanks to Keel Brightman for the photo.

We had an awesome weekend of racing on the LW. Sat was the down river portion of the event, and Sun was the first ever LVM Giant Slalom. I ended up finishing first place overall which was a great feeling on my home river. I feel like this type of racing is the way the sport should be heading and am stoked to do more of these events. Last weekend I hit up the first annual Nortwest Creeking Competiton. I took down first place in the Huckfest over Sunset Falls on the East Fork of the Lewis River. It was a good time, lots of freewheels and whatnot. I went for a seal launch into the base of the falls for the crowd pleaser. The race was also sweet with a 80 racer turnout. I finished the race in 3rd place… but only 1/5th of a second off second. Here are some shots of the action.

No one was around to shoot a photo for this one so I set my camera on a rock and pressed the self timer. Colorado play parks are sick.

North Fork of the Payette was cold. Solid 15 miles of whitewater.

I have been in Pucon for two weeks now. It is one of the best creeking destinations I could imagine. Our friend and local river guru Rodrigo has taken us on the best biggest runs around. Our trip started out on day one with a 60 footer, day three a 70 footer, and day five a 50. The runs have been just as quality as the drops around here. It has been an awesome start to a great trip. One of our best adventures came on the Florin River. We were the third group I believe to do it so the beta wasnt all to good. We just knew there was a sweet double drop and 50 footer. After the 50 there is an unrunnable gorge that we had to hike out at, due to our friends past experience we heard hiking out on the left might be easier than his last attempt at a mile portage in the jungle on the right. We bashed through the thick bamboo ending up lost and turned around as night fall approached. We hiked over a hill thinking we would be at the road only to find the river again, half the group thought we were upstream and half downstream. We made it down the steep jungle to find we were downstream but still in the lowest part of the gorge. It was close to dark so we figured our best bet was to route the gorge, we ended up getting to unscoutable rapids that looked to bad to run blind. We were all thinking we would have to spend a night unprepared in the gorge until we happened to see a small wood carven hot springs on the side of the gorge. Turned out there was a latter up and out right there that lead to a huge cow pasture..really random no houses or roads near by. After warming up for a few minutes we hiked out and dowstream to the end of the gorge and crossed to the take out, meeting our film crew just as the sun went fully down.
The roadside runs closer to Pucon are a lot easier to access and I would highly recommend anyone wanting a class 4 or 5 adventure to contact Rodrigo @ www.kayakpucon.net

We have moved to Veracruz and have been getting on some good runs. The Alseseca has been keeping us entertained warming up on the roadside section. We will be heading downstream the next couple of days to the bigger drops but heres a few photos for now.

This drop is the first on Canyon Creek in the Oregon Cup. I took 4th in the Extreme Race. Josh Bectel took Second in Extreme and 1st in the boatercross to give him the overall win. I had to miss out on the boatercross so I had no overall ranking. Fun event hopefully more people will come out next year.

A landslide has drastically changed the waterfall known as Money Drop. The drop is on Rock Creek in Stevenson WA, it was first run by Trip Jennings and LJ Groth. The landslide is nearly taking houses off of the cliff but the new Mini Money Drop looked to perfect to let go unrun. A few rocks were falling off of the cliff while we were there. After running the drop I quickly got out of the canyon to to avoid any more potential landslide action.

Rivers are flowing nicely in the Northwest and staying at consistant levels. Been trying to keep things interesting by taking the Ammo on some class V. I have been impressed how solid it is and how well you can throw it around. Big loops for sure!

BoaterCross Race

Headed down to the Collegiate National Championships in Reno this weekend. Ended up making it to the semi-finals in the boatercross, it was a physical event with people taking paddles to the face quite a bit. Luckily no one got seriously injured. Levels were a bit low for the play spot I ended up one spot out of the final rounds. Won some money in the casino and had a good time for sure. Looking forward to the Reno River Fest in a couple of weeks.

Got a break from Eugene to head back to HR for the weekend and paddle with the Crew. Lana Young took this photo you can check more of her photos at lanayoung.com. After I ran it Erik Boomer swam over it Jason Hale style, it went well he just hurt his ears from going so deep but atleast he didnt have to swim over chaos.
