The Speeder Wins Again

This weekend was the Deerfield River Festival.  They tried a new event this year.  It was well organized by Zoar Outdoor Center’s Fergus Coffey.  The competition was a mass start down the Deerfield River, a run up the steep take-out hill, and a 8 mile bike ride.  The course was short, I figured it would take me a little under an hour to do the whole thing, and I knew it was going to hurt.

Black River Festival 2007

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

I am just now recovering from an epic weekend on the Black River in Watetown, NY.  There was a more casual competitive atmosphere than many other festivals, but there was no lack of quality kayaking and good times.

Coast to Coast in a Speeder

Loch Ness

The Great Glen in Scotland is a beautiful part of the world, a fault line running diagonally across the highlands formed three long deep lochs (Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness) which were joined in the 1800’s by the Caledonian Canal, allowing boats to travel across the country from Fort William to Inverness. This seemed like the perfect summer mission for the Speeder. (more…)

With the typical ‘British summer’ rolling on [rain, rain, sun oh no more rain!], it was time to head to the French Alps in the search for cyrstal waters, good food all washed down with pleanty of fine wine…

The Spanish Freestyle Championship was celebrated in Sort last weekend (14/15 of july).

The Worlds in 2001 and the European Champs in 2004 were celebrated there as well, however the spot is different every year because it is destroyed every spring with high river levels.

Two Girls in the “Lechschluchten”

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

After a playboating session in the washing mashine (Augsburg) friday night, Birgit and I drove into the alps in order to run the Lech Gorge. I was quite exited, as it was my first time trying out the Ammo S and then two girls alone on difficult whitewater is always something special for me. We had a great time on the water and a perfect weekend.

In the beginning I was a little bit skeptical, what I should think of the Ammo, but after a few rapids I was faszinated. I have never paddeled a boat before, which is so easy to boof. The boat is light and easy to manoever. For sure it is short, but it doesn´t feel slow at all. This seems to be the right creekboat for girls. And still it is fun to play in it.

First Day in the Burn!!!

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

I picked up a shiny new Burn and immediately had one thing on my mind: get into some goods!

I was in Northern Oregon and with the great weather and spring melt, the obvious choice was to get on the Oregon Salmon while it was in its small window of fun flows. The water turned out to be a little low, but it was still a great day!

The Salmon River flows off the south-west face of Mount Hood and has gotten quite a bit of attention in the last few years. This year we went in with a couple reporters from the Associated Press and got a great story and a video from the day to add to the buzz about the run.
